In organizations with a tradition of conflict, argument, misunderstanding a person taking a position on a particular subject will have another attack that position. So “A” attacks “B” and “B” attacks “A”. This method is used in law courts, in parliaments, in business negotiations, and in family discussions. In some cases, it is quite useful, but it is not the only way to explore a subject. Some organizations find the method too aggressive. It can also be seen that each side is more interested in winning rather than exploring the subject. When we are thinking about something, we are usually trying to do everything at once. Why do we ASSUME that there is ONE setting that will be adequate for all our thinking? Why do we try to do EVERYTHING AT ONCE? Most are familiar with de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats Method and is used worldwide in all manners of organizations, ranging from major businesses to families and schools. It is used because it is simple and practical. When an issue is discussed, the person present applies a particular hat to that issue and thinks in the same direction. The Asian Effective Thinking Caps (ETC) is actually different coloured headgears worn by the Asian minds, representing EVERY BASIC TYPE OF PLANNED THINKING. It provides a holistic framework by moving away from the traditional and adversarial Western concept of thinking to the application of a more collaborative exploration of a subject, hence, a strong application of the eastern values and culture in an Asian context.
